ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — At Rainbow Community School, students in preschool through eighth grade begin each day with meditation.

“Instead of just coming to school and going right to math, we kind of center ourselves first to, like, be more relaxed,” eighth-grader Catherine Lutkowski said.

For the last 40 years, this Asheville private school has been using mindfulness and meditation to help their students transition into classroom mode each morning.

“The main reasons why we hold it so sacred in this school is so that we can help children develop a greater purpose, as well as a deep inner reflection on how they show up in the world, and how they show up for others in their community,” Curriculum Director and Development Coordinator West Willmore said.

Officials at Rainbow Community School always knew it worked for their students, but just recently science has proven them right.

“There’s been some really incredible research out of Columbia Teachers College,” Willmore said. “Doctor Lisa Miller has shared some research that says the number one protector for adolescence against depression, anxiety, as well as risky behavior, is having a deep spiritual core.”

They only use 30 minutes of each school day for these practices, which is why they believe every school should incorporate meditation.

“If we can have this practiced in more schools, I can only imagine what this can do for society,” Willmore said.
